Old Roof Removed

All of your old roofing is removed, leaving a bare naked roof – what do you see?

This is where the rubber starts meeting the road.

This is the foundation of your roofing system. How solid is it?

At this point, decayed sheathing/decking should be replaced.

At this point, problems with any framing should be repaired.

At this point, any bathroom vents that are venting into the attic should be corrected to vent through the roof.

At this point, any loose decking that needs to be nailed down, should be.
NOTE: Old loose nails should be removed.
The old nail holes should not be reused.
Only nails that meet building code should be used. And even then, galvanized ring shank at the MINIMUM.

Are there any pieces of decking that do not meet the minimum width (6 inches)? What about gaps between the sheets?

Is the old roof decking made from boards? Are they all the same height? Do they meet the minimum thickness, width and length?

Is there a gap along the edge of the rake and/or eaves?

Is the opening for the ridge vent too big?

Is a cricket needed for the chimney?

If there IS a chimney, is the decking properly supported by framing around the chimney?

Hopefully the analysis on the roof was properly done, and there are not any big surprises. If the Roofing Company does a good analysis, and prepares you properly, major corrective actions are included in your contract.
