Your new shingle roof is FULL of holes. And that is exactly how it is designed.
Your shingle roof is NOT waterproof.
Each individual shingle IS waterproof. There are slits cut in the shingles, that water can go between.
Each nail that goes into a shingle is a hole that water can enter.
A shingle roof is “water shedding”, it isn’t waterproof.
Each shingle is overlapped in a way so that water runs down a shingle onto the next shingle.
Each shingle is designed to seal at the bottom edge so that they do not lift, and water cannot be blown under the shingle by wind.
Each nail that goes through a shingle also goes into and through the roof decking.
If the water doesn’t make it to this hole, then the water won’t come through this hole. But if water makes it to the decking, it will run down to the seam between that piece of roof decking and the piece below, anyway.
So there you go. You can tell your friends that their shingle roof is full of holes – and you would be correct!
