Building codes are a response to established failure.
Building codes are a MINIMUM standard.
Building codes are a quick shorthand that establishes basic parameters of a building project.
It doesn’t matter if it is a roof, a concrete slab, or an electrical panel.
Take this same concept to an engine rebuild on your car. There are specific tolerances, a specific amount that bolts are to be tightened, specific adjustments, and more. If you get your engine rebuilt, you ASSUME that these specifications will be followed. When the engine is completed, you expect that the correct engine oil will be put in the engine, not transmission fluid.
The same with your roof.
Pretend for a moment, that there were NO requirements, no standards, every roofer would build out of materials they made, in a manner they wanted. And you had no idea what you would get – “Just trust me, bro!”
Sometimes, still today, that is what you are getting.
In spite of the fact that the manufacture of the shingles put on your roof has very specific instructions for both installation, handling, and conditions that are too cold to install.
In spite of the fact that local building codes specify every bit of how your new roof is assembled, from ventilation requirements, framing, roof sheathing, Underlayment, ICE & Water, flashing, shingles, vents, and more.
If your project isn’t done to code and per manufacturer specifications – what are you even buying?
